Situated about 73 miles from St. George, Whitmore Canyon takes you to an overlook of the Grand Canyon with stunning views of the Colorado River. The scenery was beautiful, but to be honest, I was hoping for a little more excitement/challenge. Desert yellow daisies (Erigeron linearis) with barrel cactus, prickly pear cactus and red brome grass. The Lava Falls Trail has Changed in 13 Years! And you can go every year the area will look just a little bit different since the natural shifting of the sand can make the dunes move as much as 50 feet each year. Great find for this part of St George. Jeep and off roading clubs usually take a break here to regroup. You can still see some of the playground equipment behind the school. From this northern boundary it extends south and southeast across northern and central Arizona and the greater part of New Mexico into southwestern Texas. The 2 mile hike down and back to the bottom of the Grand Canyon took us about 2.5 hours. But do you have any idea what a van can actually do? They were the wrong tires, however. The last 10 miles takes about 1.5 hours to traverse. The next leg of the trip takes you to the Bar 10 Ranch Airstrip. You can take a joyride on the dunes for something a bit easier, or you can travel one of the Sand Mountain OHV Area trails that have high ratings for quite the challenge. A long trail to an overlook of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon Your rig needs high ground clearance as well as beefy tires to make it through this stretch. The first 60 miles to Mount Trumbull is a good dirt road. Will look forward to attempting with a better prepared rig. After 3.1 miles, take the exit (on right) toward River Road. Soon other Utah ranchers, drawn by the high desert grasses and water sources on the Arizona Strip, (all of Arizona north of the Grand Canyon) arrived. Trumbull Schoolhouse. Rest of the trail too muddy on this snowy day in st George. Beautiful views of the mountains. No bikes, dogs, or vehicles are allowed on the trail to the river, though I havent seen a word about bikers on the road, so Id guess that would be ok for example, leaving the vehicle at the schoolhouse and biking in from there. Then at the end amazing. There is a primitive restroom at the Mount Trumbull Schoolhouse along with a couple picnic tables. The road continues seven miles over lava rock down to Whitmore Canyon Overlook. Ensure your vehicle is in a good working condition. The original school building burnt down in 2000 and the existing one was built in 2001. My wife and me wanted to reach the North Rim, starting from St. George, UT. The map area is in a remote region of the Arizona Strip, northwestern Arizona about 88 km south of the nearest settlement of St. George, Utah. Note that North is to the Left. And it wasnt even July. Not too technical at all. The next 50 miles were unending mud but we managed decent time. Mclntire accompanied Whitmore on an expedition to recover the livestock. In this area, you're close to the Utah-Arizona border, Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, Snow Canyon State Park, and Zion National Park.
